DIY Kitchen Herb Garden

I don't typically think of myself as the creative type, but when it comes to home decor I get a little giddy on the inside. I can't explain it, I just know I have fun with it.

A few weeks ago, I was shopping in Walmart, mid-coronavirus scare, when I came across these random weird looking hooks in the home & garden section. They work with terra-cotta pots (4"-10" diameter) and give the illusion of floating pots. They looked too good to be true, but I grabbed a few to give them a try anyway. They were only $3.75.

Once home, I began to search for the perfect spot to try these out. We had so much wall space in our kitchen that wasn't being used. I had only a piece of "herb" artwork hanging on the wall that looked so small & I knew it needed something else, I just didn't know what. I also didn't want to hang the planter brackets there because the natural light was scarce.

We went over to my sisters that evening for dinner when I noticed a brand new shelf hanging their kitchen! It was beautiful, & guess what! They made it. I knew exactly what I wanted on our kitchen wall and where I wanted the planter brackets.

When I told Zach my idea he pointed out that there were some wood boards he found in our barn we could sand & stain. When we pulled it out I honestly couldn't believe how quickly and flawlessly my idea was coming together.

I went back to Walmart later that week and picked up six more brackets & the shelf hardware for our DIY project. I also picked up some Jacobean stain and polyurethane for the wood finish from Lowes. I also ordered a 4 ft grow light from Amazon which ended up being the most expensive part of the project($45.99). It is currently out of stock but here is the link for a pack of six should you need that many.

Please don't mind my RBF...For some reason, I make this face in all the pictures Zach takes of me lol.

We hung everything, added the hooks to the bottom of the shelf to hang the light and added the herbs.

This is the result. I am so in love and thankful for my husband. I couldn't have done this without him. He's definitely the Chip to my Joanna.

From top left to top right: sweet basil, chives, rosemary, mint, lavender, thyme

From bottom left to bottom right: sage, oregano

I am currently using the top of the shelf as a propagation station.

Are you growing herbs in your kitchen? I would love to see your setup. Send me pictures of your setup on Instagram by tagging @always_willow in your photo or your story. Also, if you have a propagation station I would love to see that as well.
